The Importance of Responsive Design

By now everyone is aware of Apple‘s launch of the new iPhone, the iPad Pro, and new Apple TV. As technology moves forward at a rapid pace, we wonder what changes are on the horizon for the web.

Everything is Going Mobile

If you haven’t heard by now, smartphones are changing the way websites are designed and built. According to a Pew study, 90 percent of Americans own a cell phone. And more than 60 percent of all cell owners use their phones to access the internet. Pew also reports more than 40 percent of all Americans own a tablet of some type.

The Meaning of Responsive

A responsive site is now critical to your web presence. The phrase is stressed when talking about web design. But the term responsive can be a bit confusing. Let’s take a look at what it actually means.

We’ve all been on our cell phone trying to read information and had to enlarge the text or slide the text over to see it. Sometimes these sites don’t work or images don’t display. These sites were designed to look great on a desktop computer. Often they are several years old and outdated.

The term responsive means a site adjusts to the size screen used. A designer and programmer work together to create a language instructing the site to display a certain way on a specific device. This means it knows when a user is on a smartphone or a laptop and adjusts.

Making your site responsive is just one of the ways you can capitalize on the changing technology landscape. As always, we’re here to help. If you have any questions or would like more information, contact us.
